The pocket sprung mattress is a significant step up from open coil in how the spring system responds to the body. In an open coil mattress, the springs are connected: when one compresses, the network around it moves with it. In a pocket sprung mattress, each spring is enclosed in its own fabric pocket and compressed independently of those around it. The consequence is that the mattress responds to the weight and position of each person separately, provides more targeted support under different areas of the body, and transfers substantially less movement from one side of the bed to the other. For anyone who shares a bed, this last point is significant: pocket springs are the reason one person can move or adjust position without disturbing their partner.

The Tufted 1000 Pocket Sprung Mattress builds on this foundation with a hand-tufted surface finish that elevates it above entry-level pocket sprung options. Hand tufting is a traditional mattress-making technique in which loops of twine are pulled through the depth of the mattress at regular intervals and tied off on both surfaces, anchoring the comfort layers to the spring unit and to each other. The result is a mattress that holds its shape through sustained use rather than gradually shifting and bunching at the surface. The tufted finish prevents the comfort layers from migrating toward the edges or compressing unevenly in the areas of heaviest use, which extends the life of the sleeping surface and keeps the feel consistent over time. The tufted buttons are visible on the surface of the mattress: they are a functional detail that is also a reliable indicator of quality in the pocket sprung category.

The spring count of 1000 at a standard double size gives a good level of individual spring response across the sleeping surface. Each spring is smaller and more precise in how it responds to the body than in an open coil system, with the full 1000-spring network covering the sleeping area at a density that provides genuine contouring support at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. The feel is medium, which suits the widest range of sleeper types: firm enough to support the spine correctly for back sleepers, yielding enough to accommodate the shoulder and hip of a side sleeper, and balanced enough across all positions to suit combination sleepers who move through the night.

The Tufted 1000 is the right choice for anyone moving up from an open coil mattress who wants noticeably better individual spring response and motion isolation. It is particularly well suited to couples, where the independent spring action and the motion isolation it provides make a measurable difference to the quality of sleep for both people in the bed. It is compatible with all Macba Beds divan bases, bed frames with slat bases, and ottoman bases, and is available in every standard UK size from single through to super king.

KEY FEATURES & BENEFITS

🔹 1000 Individually Pocketed Springs

Each of the 1000 springs in the Tufted 1000 is enclosed in its own fabric pocket and compresses independently of the springs around it. This individual spring action means the mattress responds precisely to the weight and position of the body across the full sleeping surface, provides more targeted support under different body areas, and transfers significantly less movement from one side of the bed to the other compared to an open coil system.

🔹 Hand-Tufted Surface Finish

The Tufted 1000 is hand-tufted: loops of twine are pulled through the depth of the mattress at regular intervals and tied off on both surfaces, anchoring the comfort layers to the spring unit and to each other. Hand tufting prevents the comfort layers from migrating or compressing unevenly, keeps the sleeping surface consistent in feel and shape over years of use, and is one of the most reliable indicators of quality in the pocket sprung mattress category. The tufted buttons are visible on both surfaces of the mattress.

🔹 Excellent Motion Isolation

The individual pocket spring action of the Tufted 1000 means that movement on one side of the bed is not transmitted across the spring network to the other side. When one person adjusts position during the night, the other is significantly less likely to feel it. This is the core practical benefit of pocket sprung over open coil for couples, and the Tufted 1000 delivers it reliably across all sizes.

🔹 Medium Feel

The Tufted 1000 has a medium feel that works across the widest range of sleeper types in the pocket sprung range. Firm enough to support the natural curve of the spine for back sleepers. Accommodating enough at the shoulder and hip for side sleepers. Balanced enough across all positions to suit combination sleepers who change position through the night. The medium feel is the centre of the range and the most versatile position in it.

🔹 Shape Retention Over Time

The hand-tufted construction anchors the comfort layers in place and prevents the gradual migration and bunching that affects untufted pocket sprung mattresses over time. The tufting distributes compression evenly across the comfort layer filling and maintains the shape of the sleeping surface consistently, which means the feel and support of the Tufted 1000 stays closer to its original specification for longer than untufted alternatives at the same spring count.

🔹 Tufted on Both Surfaces

The hand tufting runs through the full depth of the mattress and is tied off on both surfaces, which means the Tufted 1000 is a rotatable mattress. Regular rotation end to end distributes compression evenly across the spring system and the comfort layers, extending the working life of the mattress. Check the individual product listing for flippability: some tufted pocket sprung mattresses are one-sided and should be rotated but not flipped.

🔹 Rod Edge Border Construction

The border of the Tufted 1000 is reinforced with a rod edge construction that keeps the sleeping surface consistent right to the edge of the mattress. No roll-off, no compression at the sides, and full usable support across the complete mattress width. The rod edge maintains the shape of the mattress border over time and provides consistent support for anyone who sleeps close to the edge.

🔹 Compatible with All Macba Beds Bases

The Tufted 1000 is compatible with all Macba Beds divan bases, bed frames with slat bases, and ottoman bases. Check the individual product page for electric adjustable bed compatibility: pocket sprung mattresses are generally compatible with adjustable bases when rated for adjustable use, but this should always be confirmed before ordering for an adjustable bed.

🔹 All Standard UK Sizes

Available in single, small double, double, king size, and super king. Spring count scales proportionally with mattress size to maintain the same spring density across all sizes.

DELIVERY & SETUP

Delivery

Free tracked delivery is included on every order to mainland UK addresses. No minimum spend, no hidden charges at checkout. You will receive a tracking reference by email as soon as your order is dispatched. Pocket sprung mattresses are delivered rolled and vacuum-packed or flat-packed depending on size. Allow the mattress to fully expand and breathe for at least two to four hours before sleeping on it. The hand-tufted construction will be fully apparent once the mattress has expanded to its full dimensions. Deliveries to the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland, and some remote postcodes may take a little longer: contact the Macba Beds team before ordering if you need to confirm timescales for your area.

Setup

Place the Tufted 1000 on your chosen base with the labelled top surface facing upward for first use. Ensure the base is clean, flat, and undamaged before placing the mattress. On a slat frame, confirm all slats are correctly seated and evenly spaced at no more than 7cm apart: gaps wider than this can allow individual pocket springs to push through the slat gaps over time, which reduces support consistency and accelerates wear in those areas. On a divan base, ensure the platform top or spring top is flat and undamaged.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

Rotation Schedule

Rotate the Tufted 1000 end to end every two to three months for the first year, then every four to six months thereafter. Regular rotation distributes compression evenly across the pocket spring system and the tufted comfort layers, maintains the medium feel consistently across the full sleeping surface, and extends the working life of the mattress. The hand-tufted construction already does significant work to maintain shape retention, but rotation supports this further over the long term.

Flipping

Check the individual product listing for flipping guidance. The Tufted 1000 has tufted buttons on both surfaces, which indicates the mattress is constructed with comfort layers on both sides. If the product listing confirms it is flippable, rotate and flip every three to four months. If it is labelled as rotate-only, follow the rotation schedule above without flipping.

Ventilation

Leave the mattress uncovered for at least thirty minutes when changing bedding to allow moisture to escape from the tufted surface and the pocket spring system. The individual spring pockets allow reasonable airflow through the spring unit: regular ventilation during bedding changes maintains this over time.

Mattress Protector

A mattress protector is strongly recommended. It protects the tufted surface from body oils, moisture, and soiling, maintains the mattress in warranty condition, and does not affect the medium feel if a thin, breathable protector is used. A waterproof protector is recommended for households with children.

Cleaning

Do not wet the mattress or use a steam cleaner. For surface marks, spot clean with a lightly damp cloth and a small amount of mild fabric cleaner and leave to air dry completely before remaking the bed. Do not allow moisture to penetrate through the tufted surface into the spring system. Vacuum the tufted surface lightly on a low setting every few months, working carefully around the tufted buttons.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What does hand-tufted mean and why does it matter?

A: Hand tufting is a process in which loops of twine are pulled through the full depth of the mattress at regular intervals and tied off on both surfaces. This anchors the comfort layers to the spring unit and to each other, preventing the filling from migrating toward the edges or compressing unevenly in the areas of heaviest use. A tufted mattress holds its shape and feel more consistently over time than an untufted one at the same spring count. The tufted buttons visible on the surface of the mattress are the sign that this process has been carried out. It is a traditional technique associated with quality in the pocket sprung category.

Q: What is the difference between pocket sprung and open coil?

A: In an open coil mattress, the springs are connected in a network that moves together. In a pocket sprung mattress, each spring is enclosed in its own fabric pocket and compresses independently. The practical differences are better individual body support, more targeted response under different body areas, and significantly less motion transfer from one side of the bed to the other. For couples, the reduction in motion transfer is the most immediately noticeable benefit: one person moving during the night disturbs the other far less on a pocket sprung mattress than on an open coil.

Q: Is 1000 springs enough?

A: Yes, for the majority of sleepers. 1000 pocket springs at a double size gives a good level of individual spring response and contouring support across the sleeping surface. The Tufted 1000 is a well-specified mattress at this spring count that suits a wide range of sleeper types. If you want the finest level of spring response and motion isolation available in the Macba Beds range, the Macba Beds 2000 Pocket Sprung doubles the spring count at the same size and provides finer contouring and better motion isolation. But for most couples and individuals, the Tufted 1000 at 1000 springs is an excellent everyday mattress.

Q: Is it suitable for couples?

A: Yes, and particularly well suited to couples. The independent pocket spring action means one person moving during the night transfers significantly less movement to the other side than on an open coil mattress. The hand-tufted medium feel works well for couples with similar sleep preferences in the middle of the firmness range. If the two people in the bed have significantly different firmness preferences, a split mattress arrangement at king or super king size with individually chosen mattresses is the more targeted solution.

Q: Should I rotate or flip this mattress?

A: Rotate regularly in all cases: end to end every two to three months for the first year, then every four to six months. For flipping, check the individual product listing. The presence of tufted buttons on both surfaces indicates the mattress has comfort layers on both sides and may be flippable: the product listing will confirm this. If it is flippable, rotate and flip every three to four months for the best wear distribution.

Q: Can I use this on an electric adjustable bed?

A: Pocket sprung mattresses are generally compatible with electric adjustable beds when specifically rated for adjustable use by the manufacturer. Check the individual product page for the Tufted 1000 before ordering for an adjustable base. If you need a confirmed adjustable-compatible mattress, the Hybrid Memory Foam in the Macba Beds range is the confirmed option.

Q: What base does this mattress need?

A: The Tufted 1000 is compatible with all Macba Beds divan bases, bed frames with slat bases, and ottoman bases. On a slat frame, ensure slats are evenly spaced at no more than 7cm apart to prevent individual pocket springs from pushing through the gaps over time. On a divan base, ensure the platform or spring top is flat and undamaged.

Q: How long does delivery take and is it free?

A: Free tracked delivery is included on every order to mainland UK addresses with no minimum spend and no charges at checkout. You will receive a tracking link by email once dispatched. For remote postcodes including the Scottish Highlands and Northern Ireland, contact the Macba Beds team before ordering to confirm lead times.

Q: What is the 100-day free trial?

A: Every Tufted 1000 Pocket Sprung Mattress comes with a 100-day free trial from the date of delivery. Over three months to sleep on it and be completely certain it is right. If it is not, contact the Macba Beds team within that period and they will guide you through the next steps.

Q: What does the 5-year warranty cover?

A: The 5-year warranty covers the pocket spring system and construction of the Tufted 1000 against manufacturing defects. If the spring system fails or the mattress develops a fault in materials or workmanship within five years, Macba Beds will repair or replace it. Contact the team with your order number to make a claim. Normal wear, staining, or compression from use without a mattress protector is not covered.

Q: Does it come with a mattress protector?

A: No. A mattress protector is sold separately and is strongly recommended to protect the tufted surface, maintain the mattress in warranty condition, and extend the working life of the sleeping surface.
