Not every mattress purchase needs to be complicated. There is a category of buyer who knows exactly what they need: firm support, reliable construction, all standard sizes available, free delivery, and a fair price. The Royal Ortho Open Coil Mattress is built for that buyer. It does not try to be the most sophisticated mattress in the range. It tries to be the most dependable firm support mattress at the most accessible price point, and it succeeds at that without compromise.
The Royal Ortho is built on a firm-tension open coil spring system. The interconnected coil network provides a consistent, even support surface across the full width and length of the mattress. The firm tension rating means the mattress maintains resistance under normal body weight in the areas that matter for spinal alignment: the lower back, the hips, and the lumbar region. Back sleepers lie on a surface that supports the natural curve of the spine without allowing the hips to sink out of alignment. Stomach sleepers get the resistance needed to prevent the hip drop that causes lower back strain when sleeping face down. The support the Royal Ortho provides is not complicated. It is exactly what a firm mattress is supposed to do, and it does it consistently.
The mattress is finished with a ticked fabric cover on both surfaces. The ticked finish is clean, practical, and suitable for use on both sides of the mattress, which makes the Royal Ortho fully flippable. Regular rotation and flipping distributes compression evenly across the full spring system and both sleeping surfaces, extending the working life of the mattress and keeping the firm support characteristics consistent over time. The rod edge border construction reinforces the perimeter of the mattress with a rigid rod system that keeps the sleeping surface firm to the very edge, preventing the roll-off and side compression that affects mattresses without this construction.
The Royal Ortho is the right choice for guest rooms where the mattress needs to suit a range of sleepers reliably without being chosen for any one of them. It is the right choice for children's rooms and single beds where straightforward firm support at a practical price is the priority. It is the right choice for anyone furnishing a property who needs a dependable mattress across multiple rooms without excessive spend. And it is the right choice for any back or stomach sleeper who simply wants a firm, reliable surface and does not need anything more than that. Compatible with all Macba Beds divan bases, bed frames with slat bases, and ottoman bases. Available in every standard UK size from single through to super king.

KEY FEATURES & BENEFITS
🔹 Firm Open Coil Spring System
The Royal Ortho is built on a firm-tension open coil spring system. The connected coil network provides a consistent, even support surface across the full mattress area. The firm rating ensures the spring system maintains its resistance under normal body weight in the areas critical for spinal alignment, with no soft spots and no variation in tension between the centre and the sides of the sleeping surface.
🔹 Orthopaedic Spinal Support
The firm tension of the Royal Ortho is calibrated to maintain the natural lumbar curve of a back sleeper and prevent the hip drop that causes lower back strain in stomach sleepers. The spring system supports the body at the surface rather than allowing it to sink into a position that places stress on the spine and joints over the course of the night. Reliable, consistent orthopaedic support at a price that makes it the practical choice across multiple rooms.
🔹 Rod Edge Border Construction
The perimeter of the Royal Ortho is reinforced with a rod edge construction that keeps the sleeping surface firm and consistent right to the edge of the mattress. No roll-off, no compression at the sides, and full usable support across the complete mattress width including the edges. The rod edge also maintains the shape of the mattress border over consistent daily use, preventing gradual deformation at the perimeter.
🔹 Ticked Cover on Both Surfaces
The Royal Ortho is finished with a clean ticked fabric cover on both surfaces. The ticked finish is practical, hardwearing, and appropriate for use on either side of the mattress, making the Royal Ortho fully flippable. The ticked cover is the right finish for a mattress designed for everyday and guest room use where practicality and durability are as important as the sleeping surface quality.
🔹 Fully Flippable for Maximum Longevity
The ticked cover on both surfaces means the Royal Ortho can be rotated end to end and flipped side to side regularly. Consistent rotation and flipping distributes the compression of the coil system evenly across both surfaces and the full spring network, prevents the formation of body-shaped indentations in one area, and extends the working life of the mattress significantly. A full rotation and flip schedule is included in the care instructions.
🔹 Durable Open Coil Construction
Open coil spring systems are durable by design. The connected coil network distributes load across the full system rather than concentrating wear at individual springs, which means the mattress maintains its firm support characteristics over consistent daily use across multiple years. The Royal Ortho is built to last through the warranty period and well beyond it with proper rotation and care.
🔹 The Practical Choice for Guest Rooms & Multi-Room Furnishing
The Royal Ortho is the mattress for situations where reliable support at an accessible price across multiple sizes is the priority. Guest rooms, children's rooms, rental properties, and secondary bedrooms where a dependable firm mattress is needed without excessive spend. It suits any sleeper who comes through the door without needing to be tailored to any one preference.
🔹 Compatible with All Macba Beds Bases
The Royal Ortho is compatible with all Macba Beds divan bases, bed frames with slat bases, and ottoman bases. It is not rated for electric adjustable bed use: the connected open coil structure is not designed to flex with a motorised adjustable base. For adjustable beds, the Hybrid Memory Foam in the Macba Beds range is the confirmed compatible option.
🔹 All Standard UK Sizes
Available in single, small double, double, king size, and super king. All cut to standard UK mattress dimensions and compatible with the full Macba Beds base range.
🔹 100-Day Free Trial

DELIVERY & SETUP
Delivery
Free tracked delivery is included on every order to mainland UK addresses. No minimum spend, no hidden charges at checkout. You will receive a tracking reference by email as soon as your order is dispatched. Mattresses are delivered rolled and vacuum-packed where possible, or flat-packed for larger sizes. Allow the mattress to fully expand and breathe for at least two to four hours before use. Deliveries to the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland, and some remote postcodes may take a little longer: contact the Macba Beds team before ordering if you need to confirm timescales for your area.
Setup
Place the Royal Ortho on your chosen base with the labelled top surface facing upward for first use. Ensure the base is clean, flat, and undamaged before placing the mattress. On a slat frame, confirm all slats are correctly seated and evenly spaced at no more than 7cm apart before use: uneven slat spacing can create pressure points in the spring system over time. On a divan base, ensure the platform top or spring top is flat and undamaged. The mattress will settle fully into its firm feel within the first few nights of use.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
Rotation & Flipping Schedule
The Royal Ortho is a fully flippable mattress and should be both rotated and flipped regularly to distribute wear evenly. For the first six months, rotate end to end and flip every eight weeks. After the first six months, rotate and flip every three to four months. Consistent rotation and flipping is the single most effective maintenance action for extending the working life of the mattress and maintaining even firm support across both surfaces.
Ventilation
Leave the mattress uncovered for at least thirty minutes when changing bedding to allow moisture to escape from the ticked surface and the spring core. The open coil construction allows reasonable airflow through the spring system: ventilation during bedding changes keeps this effective over the long term.
Mattress Protector
A mattress protector is strongly recommended. It protects the ticked cover from body oils, moisture, and soiling that cannot be cleaned from the mattress surface, maintains the mattress in warranty condition, and does not affect the firm feel if a thin, breathable protector is used. A waterproof protector is recommended for children's rooms and guest rooms where liquid exposure is a higher risk.
Cleaning
Do not wet the mattress or use a steam cleaner. For surface marks, spot clean with a lightly damp cloth and a small amount of mild fabric cleaner and leave to air dry completely before remaking the bed. Do not allow moisture to penetrate to the spring system. Vacuum the ticked surface lightly on a low setting every few months to remove surface dust.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: How does the Royal Ortho differ from the Macba Orthopaedic?
A: Both are firm open coil orthopaedic mattresses. The Royal Ortho is the entry-level option in the firm orthopaedic range, with a ticked cover and a price point that makes it the practical choice for guest rooms, children's rooms, and multi-room furnishing. The Macba Orthopaedic sits a step above in specification, with a damask cover that gives a slightly more finished sleeping surface. Both deliver the same core firm orthopaedic support. The right choice between them depends primarily on the budget and the intended use.
Q: Is the Royal Ortho too firm for everyday use?
A: Not for back and stomach sleepers who prefer or need a firm surface. Firm mattresses suit a significant proportion of sleepers, particularly those who have experienced lower back discomfort on softer surfaces. If you have slept comfortably on firm mattresses before, the Royal Ortho will suit everyday use. If you are uncertain about the firm feel, the Clayton Mattress at medium-firm is the step between the Royal Ortho and a standard medium, and gives you orthopaedic support with slightly more give at the surface.
Q: Is it suitable for couples?
A: The Royal Ortho suits couples where both partners are comfortable with a firm sleeping surface. As an open coil mattress, motion transfer is higher than on a pocket sprung: movement on one side of the bed will be felt on the other. If motion isolation is a priority alongside firm support, the Macba Orthopaedic is the same feel with a slightly higher specification, or the Uxbridge 1000 Pocket Sprung gives a medium-firm pocket sprung option with significantly better motion isolation.
Q: Is it good for guest rooms?
A: Yes. The Royal Ortho is one of the most practical choices for guest rooms in the Macba Beds range. A firm mattress suits the widest range of occasional sleepers without being specifically tailored to any one preference. The accessible price point means it is a sensible choice for guest rooms where spend needs to be proportionate to the frequency of use. The flippable construction and rod edge border mean it will maintain its performance and shape reliably over the long term even with irregular use.
Q: Can I use the Royal Ortho on an electric adjustable bed?
A: No. The Royal Ortho uses a connected open coil spring system that is not designed to flex with a motorised adjustable base. Using an open coil mattress on an electric adjustable bed risks damaging the spring system and the base mechanism. For electric adjustable beds, the Hybrid Memory Foam in the Macba Beds range is confirmed compatible with adjustable use.
Q: Should I flip or just rotate the Royal Ortho?
A: Both. The Royal Ortho has a ticked cover on both surfaces and is designed to be fully flippable as well as rotatable. Flipping in addition to rotating distributes wear across both surfaces and the full coil network, which extends the working life of the mattress significantly more than rotation alone. Rotate end to end and flip every eight weeks for the first six months, then every three to four months thereafter.
Q: What base does it need?
A: The Royal Ortho is compatible with all Macba Beds divan bases, bed frames with slat bases, and ottoman bases. On a slat frame, ensure slats are correctly seated and evenly spaced at no more than 7cm apart to provide consistent support across the full open coil system. On a divan base, ensure the platform top or spring top is flat and in good condition before placing the mattress.
Q: How long does delivery take and is it free?
A: Free tracked delivery is included on every order to mainland UK addresses with no minimum spend and no charges at checkout. You will receive a tracking link by email once dispatched. For remote postcodes including the Scottish Highlands and Northern Ireland, contact the Macba Beds team before ordering to confirm lead times for your area.
Q: What is the 100-day free trial?
A: Every Royal Ortho Open Coil Mattress comes with a 100-day free trial from the date of delivery. Over three months to sleep on it and confirm it is right. Firm mattresses can take a few nights to adjust to, and the 100-day trial gives you the time to move through that adjustment period and make a fully informed decision. If it is not right within that period, contact the Macba Beds team and they will guide you through the next steps.
Q: What does the 5-year warranty cover?
A: The 5-year warranty covers the spring system and construction of the Royal Ortho Open Coil Mattress against manufacturing defects. If the spring system fails or the mattress develops a fault in materials or workmanship within five years, Macba Beds will repair or replace it. Contact the team with your order number to make a claim. Normal wear, staining, or compression from use without a mattress protector is not covered under the warranty.
Q: Does it come with a mattress protector?
A: No. A mattress protector is sold separately and is strongly recommended, particularly for guest rooms and children's rooms where protecting the ticked cover from moisture and soiling is especially important.
Q: What is the return policy?
A: You can return an unused item in its original packaging within 14 days of delivery. The full returns policy is available on the Macba Beds website. Contact the customer support team with your order number to start a return.
We use our own courier vans to deliver our goods. Normal delivery time is 3-5 working days. Presently, we exclusively ship within the United Kingdom. We extend the privilege of free shipping for all our items.
