The pillowtop mattress has a specific quality that a standard upholstered spring mattress cannot replicate regardless of the depth of its comfort layers. A sewn-on pillowtop adds a raised, separately filled comfort section directly onto the top surface of the mattress, creating a sleeping surface that has a visually and physically distinct cushioned quality: the pillowtop rises above the main body of the mattress, giving the bed a generous profile and a sleeping surface that settles immediately around the contours of the body without the resistance that a uniformly upholstered spring mattress produces at the sleeping surface.

The Mayfair Pillowtop is built on a pocket sprung base. The pocket springs provide the structural support that anchors the comfort of the pillowtop in reality rather than in luxury alone: each spring compresses independently, responds to the weight and shape of the body with individual precision, provides motion isolation between two people sharing the bed, and holds the mattress in correct shape over years of consistent use. The pillowtop above the spring base is filled with a soft fibre filling that gives the Mayfair its characteristic feel: a surface that yields immediately and cushions the body without requiring the spring system below to be set to a soft tension. The springs can remain at the medium tension that suits the widest range of sleeper types, and the pillowtop provides the additional softness above them.

The feel of the Mayfair is soft-medium. The pillowtop layer creates a soft quality at the sleeping surface, and the pocket spring base beneath it provides the structural medium that prevents the mattress from feeling uniformly soft throughout. The soft-medium combination is the feel most associated with quality hotel beds: a sleeping surface that envelops rather than resists, with the structural spring support underneath that prevents the body from sinking to the base of the mattress. Guests who sleep particularly well in hotels and struggle to replicate that quality at home are typically sleeping on a pillowtop mattress. The Mayfair brings that quality into the Macba Beds range.

The Mayfair is a one-sided mattress. The pillowtop is sewn onto the top surface and the construction is not reversible: the mattress should be rotated end to end regularly but should not be flipped. This is standard for all pillowtop mattresses. Regular rotation is the maintenance practice that keeps the feel consistent and the pillowtop filling evenly distributed over the life of the mattress. The Mayfair is compatible with all Macba Beds divan bases, bed frames with slat bases, and ottoman bases, and is available in every standard UK size from single through to super king.

KEY FEATURES & BENEFITS

🔹 Sewn-On Pillowtop Comfort Layer

The defining feature of the Mayfair is its pillowtop: a separately filled comfort section sewn permanently onto the top surface of the mattress. The pillowtop is filled with soft fibre and rises above the main mattress body, creating a visually generous sleeping surface and a quality of cushioning at the point of contact that a standard upholstered spring mattress cannot replicate regardless of comfort layer depth. It is not a separate topper. It is part of the mattress and will not shift, compress flat, or require replacement.

🔹 Soft-Medium Feel

The Mayfair has a soft-medium feel: soft at the sleeping surface from the pillowtop layer, with the structural medium of the pocket spring base beneath it. The pillowtop provides the cushioned, enveloping quality that gives the bed its hotel character. The pocket spring base provides the structural support that prevents the body from sinking through to a base surface. The two layers work together to create a feel that is softer than any standard medium spring mattress and more supported than a fully soft mattress.

🔹 Hotel-Quality Sleeping Surface

The pillowtop construction is the standard comfort specification of quality hotel beds. The combination of a raised, separately filled comfort layer and a pocket spring base produces the sleeping experience that hotel guests associate with sleeping particularly well away from home. The Mayfair brings that construction into the Macba Beds range at a price that makes it a realistic everyday choice rather than a luxury reserved for hotel stays.

🔹 Pocket Spring Support Base

Beneath the pillowtop is a pocket spring base with individually pocketed springs that each compress independently. The pocket spring base provides the structural support that holds the body correctly above the mattress, good motion isolation between two people sharing the bed, and the responsive quality that prevents the sinking sensation that a fully soft or foam surface can produce. The pillowtop sits above the springs and is supported by them without replacing their function.

🔹 Good Motion Isolation for Couples

The pocket spring base of the Mayfair provides significantly better motion isolation than any open coil mattress. One person moving during the night disturbs the other considerably less. The pillowtop layer above the springs further absorbs surface movement. For couples who want a soft-feel mattress with good motion isolation, the Mayfair is the right option in the pillowtop range.

🔹 Pressure Relief Across All Contact Points

The combination of the pillowtop comfort layer and the pocket spring base means the Mayfair distributes the weight of the body more evenly across the sleeping surface than a standard medium spring mattress. The pillowtop cushions the shoulder, hip, and knee, reducing pressure at those contact points without the body sinking through to a spring surface directly below. Side sleepers, lighter individuals, and anyone who experiences pressure discomfort on firmer surfaces will find the Mayfair provides the relief they need.

🔹 Generous Mattress Profile

The pillowtop adds a raised section to the top surface of the mattress, giving the Mayfair a more generous overall profile than a standard spring mattress. The raised pillowtop is visible on the mattress and contributes to the premium visual quality of the bed when made up. The additional depth also means the Mayfair requires deep-pocket fitted sheets: standard 30cm fitted sheets may not fully accommodate the total depth of the mattress with the pillowtop included.

🔹 One-Sided Construction  Rotate Only

The Mayfair is a one-sided mattress. The pillowtop is sewn onto the top surface and the construction is not reversible. The mattress should be rotated end to end regularly to distribute compression evenly across the pillowtop filling and the pocket spring base, but it should never be flipped. Flipping places the spring base face-up and the pillowtop face-down, eliminating the comfort layer and potentially damaging the pillowtop construction.

🔹 Rod Edge Border Construction

The border of the Mayfair is reinforced with a rod edge construction that keeps the sleeping surface consistent right to the edge of the mattress. The rod edge supports the pillowtop at the perimeter as well as the spring base, preventing roll-off and maintaining the full width of the sleeping surface including the edges.

🔹 Compatible with All Macba Beds Bases

The Mayfair Pillowtop is compatible with all Macba Beds divan bases, bed frames with slat bases, and ottoman bases. Check the individual product page for electric adjustable bed compatibility before ordering for an adjustable base.

🔹 All Standard UK Sizes

Available in single, small double, double, king size, and super king. All sizes feature the same pillowtop construction and soft-medium feel. The generous profile of the Mayfair reads particularly well at king and super king size.

🔹 100-Day Free Trial

Sleep on the Mayfair for up to 100 nights before making your final decision. If it is not right within that period, contact the Macba Beds team and they will take you through the next steps.

🔹 5-Year Warranty

Every Mayfair Pillowtop Mattress is backed by a 5-year warranty covering the spring system, pillowtop construction, and mattress body against manufacturing defects. If something is not right due to a fault in materials or workmanship, Macba Beds will repair or replace it.

DELIVERY & SETUP

Delivery

Free tracked delivery is included on every order to mainland UK addresses. No minimum spend, no hidden charges at checkout. You will receive a tracking reference by email as soon as your order is dispatched. Due to the pillowtop construction, the Mayfair is delivered flat-packed rather than rolled and vacuum-packed: rolling a pillowtop mattress can damage the sewn-on comfort layer and compress the pillowtop filling in ways that do not fully recover. Allow the mattress to rest for at least two to four hours in the room where it will be used before making it up. The pillowtop filling will settle and the full profile of the comfort layer will be apparent once the mattress has rested flat. Deliveries to the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland, and some remote postcodes may take a little longer: contact the Macba Beds team before ordering if you need to confirm timescales for your area.

Setup

Place the Mayfair Pillowtop on your chosen base with the pillowtop surface facing upward. Do not flip this mattress. On a slat frame, confirm all slats are correctly seated and evenly spaced at no more than 7cm apart. On a divan base, ensure the platform top or spring top is flat and undamaged. Use deep-pocket fitted sheets to accommodate the total depth of the mattress including the pillowtop layer: standard 30cm fitted sheets may not fully cover the Mayfair and can come loose during use.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

Rotation Schedule

Rotate the Mayfair Pillowtop 180 degrees end to end every two to three months for the first year, then every four to six months thereafter. Regular rotation is particularly important for a pillowtop mattress because the soft fibre filling in the comfort layer is more susceptible to compression under consistent body weight in one area than a standard upholstery layer. Rotation distributes this compression evenly across the full pillowtop surface and the pocket spring base, maintaining the generous feel of the comfort layer consistently over the life of the mattress.

Do Not Flip

The Mayfair is a one-sided mattress with the pillowtop sewn onto the top surface only. Do not flip it. Flipping places the spring base face-up and the pillowtop face-down, eliminates the comfort layer completely, and risks damaging the pillowtop construction against the base surface. Rotate only, following the schedule above.

Ventilation

Leave the mattress uncovered for at least thirty minutes when changing bedding to allow moisture to dissipate from the pillowtop surface and through the pocket spring base below. The pillowtop filling can hold moisture if the mattress is not ventilated regularly: a consistent ventilation habit during bedding changes is the most effective way to prevent this over the long term.

Mattress Protector

A mattress protector is strongly recommended on the Mayfair Pillowtop. The soft fibre filling of the pillowtop is more susceptible to moisture and soiling from the sleeping surface than a standard spring mattress comfort layer, and the pillowtop construction cannot be cleaned from the mattress without risk to the sewn-on comfort layer. A thin, breathable protector preserves the soft feel of the pillowtop while protecting it from body oils and moisture. A waterproof protector is recommended for households with children, though ensure it is breathable to avoid increasing humidity in the pillowtop filling.

Cleaning the Pillowtop Surface

Do not wet the pillowtop surface or use a steam cleaner. For surface marks, spot clean with a lightly damp cloth and a small amount of mild fabric cleaner and leave to air dry completely before remaking the bed. Do not saturate the pillowtop fabric or allow moisture to penetrate into the fibre filling: wet filling takes a very long time to dry and may develop issues if not fully dried before use. Vacuum the pillowtop surface very lightly on a low setting every few months using an upholstery attachment, working carefully over the quilted or tufted surface of the pillowtop.

Deep-Pocket Sheets

Ensure fitted sheets have a deep enough pocket to accommodate the full depth of the Mayfair including the pillowtop layer. Sheets that are too shallow will pull off during use, particularly at the corners. Deep-pocket fitted sheets with a minimum pocket depth of 38 to 40cm are recommended. Check the total mattress depth on the product listing and match your sheet depth accordingly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What is a pillowtop mattress?

A: A pillowtop mattress has an additional comfort layer sewn permanently onto the top surface of the mattress. The pillowtop is filled with soft fibre or foam and rises above the main body of the mattress, creating a raised, cushioned sleeping surface that is visually and physically distinct from a standard mattress. It is not a separate topper that you add and replace: it is part of the mattress construction, permanently attached, and will not shift or need to be repositioned. The Mayfair Pillowtop is sewn onto a pocket spring base: the pillowtop provides the surface softness and the pocket springs provide the structural support underneath it.

Q: How is a pillowtop different from a mattress topper?

A: A mattress topper is a separate item placed on top of the mattress and held in position by straps or fitted sheet tension. It can be removed, washed, and replaced. A pillowtop is a permanently sewn comfort layer that is part of the mattress itself. The pillowtop is filled and quilted as part of the mattress manufacturing process and is integrated into the mattress construction. The result is a more consistent, more durable, and visually more cohesive sleeping surface than a topper adds to a standard mattress.

Q: Can I flip a pillowtop mattress?

A: No. The Mayfair Pillowtop is a one-sided mattress. The pillowtop is sewn onto the top surface only and the mattress construction is not reversible. Flipping the mattress places the pocket spring base face-up and the pillowtop face-down, which eliminates the comfort layer entirely and can damage the pillowtop construction. Rotate the Mayfair end to end regularly but do not flip it.

Q: Is the Mayfair suitable for side sleepers?

A: Yes, and particularly well suited to them. Side sleepers carry more body weight through the shoulder and hip than back or stomach sleepers, and the pressure at those contact points on a firmer surface causes discomfort and postural restlessness. The soft-medium feel of the Mayfair, led by the pillowtop comfort layer, cushions the shoulder and hip, distributes the load across a wider area, and relieves that pressure while the pocket spring base below maintains lateral spinal alignment. Side sleepers who have found medium or medium-firm mattresses uncomfortable at the shoulder or hip will find the Mayfair provides the relief they need.

Q: Will the pillowtop go flat over time?

A: All soft comfort fillings compress with regular use. The pillowtop filling will compress more in the areas of heaviest and most consistent body contact over time. Regular rotation of the mattress, end to end every two to three months for the first year and every four to six months thereafter, is the most effective way to distribute this compression evenly across the full pillowtop surface and maintain the generous feel of the comfort layer for longer. A mattress protector reduces moisture in the filling, which also helps the fibre maintain its loft over time.

Q: Do I need special sheets for a pillowtop mattress?

A: Yes. The total depth of the Mayfair including the pillowtop layer is greater than a standard mattress and may exceed the pocket depth of standard fitted sheets. Deep-pocket fitted sheets with a minimum pocket depth of 38 to 40cm are recommended. Check the total mattress depth stated on the product listing before purchasing sheets. Sheets that are too shallow will pull off at the corners during the night, particularly on a mattress with the rounded profile of a pillowtop.

Q: Is the Mayfair suitable for couples?

A: Yes. The pocket spring base provides good motion isolation, significantly better than any open coil mattress. One person moving during the night disturbs the other considerably less. The soft-medium feel suits couples who both prefer a softer sleeping surface or a hotel-quality comfort layer. If one partner needs a firmer surface, the Mayfair may feel too soft: in that case a split mattress arrangement at king or super king, with the Mayfair on one side and a medium or medium-firm model on the other, is the more targeted solution.

Q: How does the Mayfair compare to the Savoy Pillowtop?

A: Both are pillowtop mattresses on pocket spring bases. The Mayfair has a soft-medium feel: a generous pillowtop that leads with cushioned comfort while the pocket spring base provides structural support. The Savoy Pillowtop Soft Feel has a deeper, softer pillowtop filling and a soft feel rating: it is the most cushioned mattress in the Macba Beds range. If the Mayfair is the hotel-quality soft-medium, the Savoy is the step further for buyers who want the most enveloping sleeping surface available.

Q: Can I use the Mayfair on an electric adjustable bed?

A: Check the individual product page for adjustable bed compatibility before ordering for an adjustable base. Pillowtop mattresses can be compatible with adjustable bases depending on the filling and construction of the pillowtop layer. For a confirmed adjustable-compatible mattress, the Hybrid Memory Foam in the Macba Beds range is the confirmed option.

Q: How long does delivery take and is it free?

A: Free tracked delivery is included on every order to mainland UK addresses with no minimum spend and no charges at checkout. The Mayfair is delivered flat-packed rather than rolled due to the pillowtop construction. You will receive a tracking link by email once dispatched. For remote postcodes including the Scottish Highlands and Northern Ireland, contact the Macba Beds team before ordering to confirm lead times.

Q: What is the 100-day free trial?

A: Every Mayfair Pillowtop Mattress comes with a 100-day free trial from the date of delivery. Over three months to sleep on it and be completely certain it is right. The pillowtop filling settles and softens slightly during the first few weeks of use as the fibre adapts to regular compression: the 100-day trial gives you time to move past that initial settling period and assess the Mayfair properly. If it is not right, contact the Macba Beds team and they will guide you through the next steps.

Q: What does the 5-year warranty cover?

A: The 5-year warranty covers the pocket spring system, the pillowtop construction, and the mattress body against manufacturing defects. If the spring system fails, the pillowtop stitching or construction develops a fault, or the mattress shows a defect in materials or workmanship within five years, Macba Beds will repair or replace it. Contact the team with your order number to make a claim. Normal compression of the pillowtop filling from regular use, staining, or moisture damage from use without a mattress protector is not covered.
