The Clayton occupies a position in the Macba Beds mattress range that a lot of sleepers need but rarely find named clearly: the medium-firm. Not the full firmness of a dedicated orthopaedic mattress, which some sleepers find too hard to settle into, particularly in the first few nights. Not the yielding softness of a medium or medium-soft that provides comfort at the expense of the spinal support that the back and hip area genuinely need during sleep. The Clayton is built to the tension that sits between these two positions and delivers the benefits of both without the compromises of either.

The spring system is an open coil construction with a medium-firm tension rating. The interconnected coil network provides a consistent, even support surface across the full width and length of the mattress. The medium-firm tension means there is enough resistance to prevent the hips from dropping out of alignment with the spine while allowing the mattress to accommodate the body with enough give that the surface feels settled and comfortable from the first night. Back sleepers find the Clayton supportive without the rigid quality of a full firm. Side sleepers who need more support than a medium provides find the Clayton gives them that without tipping into hardness at the shoulder and hip.

The Clayton is finished with a quilted cover on both surfaces, making it fully flippable. The quilted top adds a thin layer of surface comfort above the spring system without changing the underlying tension rating: the medium-firm feel comes from the coil system, and the quilted cover sits above it as a finished sleeping surface rather than a comfort layer that alters the support characteristics. The rod edge border construction keeps the sleeping surface consistent to the edge of the mattress, with no roll-off and no compression at the sides.

The Clayton is the right choice for sleepers who have found fully firm orthopaedic mattresses too hard to settle on, for couples where one partner needs firmer support and the other prefers the middle of the range, for everyday family bedrooms where a reliable and versatile mattress is the priority, and for guest rooms where the mattress needs to suit a wide variety of sleeping preferences without being chosen for any one of them. It is compatible with all Macba Beds divan bases, bed frames with slat bases, and ottoman bases, and available in every standard UK size from single through to super king.

KEY FEATURES & BENEFITS

🔹 Medium-Firm Open Coil Support

The Clayton is built on a medium-firm tension open coil spring system. The interconnected coil network provides a consistent, even support surface with enough resistance to maintain spinal alignment and prevent hip drop, and enough give to feel settled and comfortable from the first night. It is the tension that works for the widest range of sleeper types in the orthopaedic category.

🔹 Orthopaedic Support Without Full Firmness

The Clayton delivers the core benefit of an orthopaedic mattress, correct spinal alignment and prevention of hip drop, without the rigid feel of a full-firm rating. Sleepers who have found dedicated firm orthopaedic mattresses too hard to settle on but still need more support than a standard medium provides will find the Clayton is the right position in the range.

🔹 Quilted Cover on Both Surfaces

The Clayton is finished with a quilted cover on both surfaces. The quilting adds a thin layer of finished comfort to the sleeping surface without altering the medium-firm feel of the spring system underneath. The quilted finish on both sides makes the Clayton fully flippable, which is important for even wear and longevity.

🔹 Fully Flippable for Even Wear

The quilted cover on both surfaces means the Clayton can be rotated end to end and flipped side to side. Regular rotation and flipping distributes the compression of the coil system evenly across both surfaces, prevents body-shaped indentations from forming in one area, and significantly extends the working life of the mattress. A rotation and flip schedule is included in the care instructions.

🔹 Rod Edge Border Construction

The border of the Clayton is reinforced with a rod edge construction that keeps the sleeping surface firm and consistent right to the edge of the mattress. No roll-off, no compression at the sides, and full usable support across the complete mattress width. The rod edge also maintains the shape of the mattress border over time.

🔹 Durable Open Coil Construction

The connected open coil spring system distributes load across the full network rather than concentrating wear at individual springs. This makes the Clayton a durable everyday mattress that maintains its support characteristics over consistent daily use across the full warranty period and beyond.

🔹 Versatile Across Sleeper Types

The medium-firm tension of the Clayton suits a wider range of sleepers than either a full-firm or a medium mattress. Back sleepers get adequate spinal support. Stomach sleepers get enough resistance to prevent hip drop. Side sleepers who need more support than a medium provides find the Clayton firm enough to keep the spine aligned without the shoulder and hip pressure of a full-firm. Combination sleepers find the medium-firm sits comfortably across all positions.

🔹 Compatible with All Macba Beds Bases

The Clayton is compatible with all Macba Beds divan bases, bed frames with slat bases, and ottoman bases. It is not rated for electric adjustable bed use: the connected open coil structure is not designed to flex with a motorised adjustable base. For adjustable beds, see the Hybrid Memory Foam in the Macba Beds range.

🔹 All Standard UK Sizes

Available in single, small double, double, king size, and super king. All sizes cut to standard UK mattress dimensions and compatible with the full Macba Beds base range.

🔹 100-Day Free Trial

Sleep on the Clayton for up to 100 nights before making your final decision. If it is not right within that period, contact the Macba Beds team and they will take you through the next steps.

🔹 5-Year Warranty

DELIVERY & SETUP

Delivery

Free tracked delivery is included on every order to mainland UK addresses. No minimum spend, no hidden charges at checkout. You will receive a tracking reference by email as soon as your order is dispatched. Mattresses are delivered rolled and vacuum-packed where possible, or flat-packed for larger sizes. Allow the mattress to fully expand and breathe for at least two to four hours before use. Deliveries to the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland, and some remote postcodes may take a little longer: contact the Macba Beds team before ordering if you need to confirm timescales for your area.

Setup

Place the Clayton on your chosen base with the labelled top surface facing upward for first use. Ensure the base is clean, flat, and undamaged before placing the mattress. On a slat frame, confirm all slats are correctly seated and evenly spaced at no more than 7cm apart before use. On a divan base, ensure the platform top or spring top is undamaged and flat. The mattress will fully settle into its medium-firm feel within the first few nights of use.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

Rotation & Flipping Schedule

The Clayton is a fully flippable mattress and should be both rotated and flipped regularly. For the first six months, rotate end to end and flip every eight weeks. After the first six months, rotate and flip every three to four months. Consistent rotation and flipping is the most effective way to distribute wear evenly across the full spring system and both quilted surfaces, and to maintain the medium-firm feel throughout the working life of the mattress.

Ventilation

Leave the mattress uncovered for at least thirty minutes when changing bedding to allow moisture to escape from the quilted surface and the spring core. The open coil construction allows reasonable airflow through the spring system: ventilation during bedding changes keeps this working effectively over time.

Mattress Protector

A mattress protector is strongly recommended. It protects the quilted cover from body oils, moisture, and soiling that cannot be cleaned from the mattress surface, maintains the mattress in warranty condition, and does not affect the medium-firm feel if a thin, breathable protector is used. A waterproof protector is recommended for households with children or where liquid spillage is a risk.

Cleaning

Do not wet the mattress or use a steam cleaner. For surface marks, spot clean with a lightly damp cloth and a small amount of mild fabric cleaner, then leave to air dry completely before remaking the bed. Do not allow moisture to penetrate to the spring system. Vacuum the quilted surface lightly on a low setting every few months.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How does the Clayton differ from the Macba Orthopaedic?

A: The Macba Orthopaedic is a full-firm mattress built for back and stomach sleepers who are certain they want a hard surface. The Clayton is medium-firm: it delivers the core orthopaedic benefit of spinal alignment and hip support without the full hardness that some sleepers find difficult to settle on. The Clayton suits a wider range of sleeper types and is a better choice for couples where both partners want support but do not both want the firmest possible surface.

Q: Is medium-firm right for me?

A: Medium-firm suits the majority of back sleepers, most stomach sleepers, and side sleepers who need more support than a standard medium provides. If you currently sleep on a soft or medium mattress and wake with lower back stiffness, the Clayton is a sensible step up. If you have always preferred a firm surface and find medium mattresses too soft, the Macba Orthopaedic is the firmer option. If you are unsure, the 100-day free trial gives you time to assess the Clayton in your own bed before making a final decision.

Q: Is this suitable for couples with different preferences?

A: The Clayton at medium-firm suits couples where one or both partners need support in the middle of the firmness range. Because it is an open coil mattress, motion transfer is higher than on a pocket sprung: one person moving during the night may be felt by the other. If motion isolation is a priority alongside medium-firm support, the Macba Beds 1000 Pocket Sprung is the step up from the Clayton that addresses both needs.

Q: Can I use the Clayton on an electric adjustable bed?

A: No. The Clayton uses an open coil spring system that is not designed to flex with the movement of a motorised adjustable base. Using an open coil mattress on an adjustable bed can damage the spring system and the base mechanism. For electric adjustable beds, the Hybrid Memory Foam in the Macba Beds range is confirmed compatible.

Q: Should I flip or just rotate the Clayton?

A: Both. The Clayton has a quilted cover on both surfaces and is fully flippable. Flipping in addition to rotating distributes wear across both surfaces and extends the working life of the mattress significantly. Rotate end to end and flip every eight weeks for the first six months, then every three to four months after that.

Q: What base does the Clayton need?

A: The Clayton is compatible with all Macba Beds divan bases, slat frame bed frames, and ottoman bases. On a slat frame, ensure slats are evenly spaced and no more than 7cm apart to provide consistent support to the open coil spring system across the full mattress width. On a divan, ensure the platform or spring top is flat and undamaged before placing the mattress.

Q: How long does delivery take and is it free?

A: Free tracked delivery is included on every order to mainland UK addresses with no minimum spend and no charges at checkout. You will receive a tracking link by email once dispatched. For remote postcodes including the Scottish Highlands and Northern Ireland, contact the team before ordering to confirm lead times.

Q: What is the 100-day free trial?

A: Every Clayton Mattress comes with a 100-day free trial from the date of delivery. Over three months to sleep on it and be completely certain it is right. Medium-firm mattresses sometimes need a short settling period before the feel fully establishes itself, and the 100-day trial gives you the time to assess the Clayton properly. If it is not right, contact the Macba Beds team and they will guide you through the next steps.

Q: What does the 5-year warranty cover?

A: The 5-year warranty covers the spring system and construction of the Clayton Mattress against manufacturing defects. If the spring system fails or the mattress develops a fault in materials or workmanship within five years, Macba Beds will repair or replace it. Contact the team with your order number to make a claim. Normal wear, staining, or compression resulting from use without a mattress protector is not covered.

Q: Does it come with a mattress protector?

A: No. A mattress protector is sold separately and is strongly recommended to protect the quilted cover, maintain the mattress in warranty condition, and extend the working life of the sleeping surface.

Q: What is the return policy?

A: You can return an unused item in its original packaging within 14 days of delivery. The full returns policy is available on the Macba Beds website. Contact the customer support team with your order number to start a return.

We use our own courier vans to deliver our goods. Normal delivery time is 3-5 working days. Presently, we exclusively ship within the United Kingdom. We extend the privilege of free shipping for all our items.
