How to Clean an Upholstered Bed Frame (Velvet, Bouclé and Fabric)
An upholstered bed frame is soft, stylish and comfortable to lean against – but like any fabric furniture, it needs a little care. The good news is that keeping it looking new is easy if you build a few simple habits. Here's how to clean an upholstered bed safely.
Before you start: check the fabric
Different fabrics need slightly different care. Always check the care guidance for your fabric and test any cleaning method on a small hidden area first, such as the back of the headboard or the underside of the base.
Weekly: dust and vacuum
Dust settles on headboards just like any other surface. Once a week, or every couple of weeks:
- Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment on a low suction setting.
- Work from the top of the headboard downwards.
- Pay attention to seams, piping, buttons and the gaps between panels, where dust collects.
- Use a lint roller for pet hair.
Spills: act fast and blot
- Blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes liquid deeper and can damage the pile.
- Use a clean, dry, white cloth or kitchen roll to soak up as much as possible.
- If needed, dampen a cloth with clean lukewarm water and blot again, working from the outside of the stain inwards.
- Avoid soaking the fabric – too much water can leave water marks.
- Let it air dry naturally. Don't use a hairdryer or heater.
How to clean a velvet bed
Velvet has a short pile that can flatten where you lean against it. To keep it looking its best:
- Brush gently in the direction of the pile with a soft clothes brush to lift flattened areas.
- A handheld garment steamer, held a few centimetres away, can help refresh crushed pile – test first.
- Blot spills straight away; avoid rubbing, which can leave marks in the pile.
How to clean a bouclé bed
Bouclé's looped texture is forgiving, but loops can catch:
- Vacuum with a soft brush, never a beater bar.
- If a loop gets pulled, trim it with small scissors – don't pull it.
- Keep sharp objects, jewellery and pet claws away where possible.
What to avoid
- Bleach and strong household cleaners
- Soaking the fabric with water
- Scrubbing brushes or rough cloths
- Placing the bed in strong direct sunlight for long periods, which can fade colours
Deep cleaning
For stubborn stains or a full refresh, use a professional upholstery cleaner who can advise on the right method for your fabric.
Simple habits that help
- Use a pillow or cushion behind your back when sitting up to reduce wear on the headboard.
- Wash hair products off before leaning against the headboard – oils can mark fabric.
- Rotate your mattress regularly so the bed wears evenly.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a carpet cleaner on an upholstered bed?
It's best to avoid it unless the fabric's care guidance says it's safe, as too much water can damage upholstery.
How do I get flattened marks out of velvet?
Brush gently in the direction of the pile, or use a garment steamer held a short distance away. Test first on a hidden area.
How often should I vacuum my headboard?
Every one to two weeks is usually enough to stop dust building up.
